Background:

Yesterday, the North Carolina State Health Plan Board of Trustees (NCSHP Board) met to determine the fate of coverage for an effective, FDA-approved treatment for obesity, GLP-1 anti-obesity medications. The Board of Trustees ultimately decided to “grandfather in” current GLP-1 users but place a moratorium on new coverage beginning January 1, 2024. They will make their final decision on excluding these life-saving medications in their January meeting.

The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) applauds NCSHP for continuing coverage for those who are currently on GLP-1 medications and will continue to fight for access to comprehensive obesity care for all North Carolinians.

Take Action Now:

Use OAC’s advocacy tool below to send a letter to the NCSHP Board of Trustees and share your concerns! Urge them to provide comprehensive obesity treatment to state employees, which includes access to GLP-1 anti-obesity medications. It’s time to acknowledge obesity for the chronic disease that it is by providing access to treatments in the same way that they covered for other chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
